Copper Golem & Chest Sorting Guide for Bedrock 1.21.100

Minecraft’s Bedrock 1.21.100 update introduces a handy new feature for all base-builders and inventory managers: the Copper Golem paired with a Copper Chest. This delightful duo brings near-automatic sorting to your base, saving you time and simplifying item logistics. Let’s break down how to unlock this smart system, how it works, and how you can optimize it for your gameplay.
What Are Copper Golem and Copper Chest?
The Copper Golem is a revived concept—originally submitted in the 2021 Mob Vote that it didn’t win—now reimagined as a friendly companion that helps organize your gear. Instead of pressing buttons like earlier concept versions, this golem takes items from Copper Chests and intelligently sorts them into nearby regular chests.
The Copper Chest is a new type of storage block. Crafted using copper ingots and a standard chest, it spawns alongside the golem and acts as the staging ground for sorting. Just drop items into it—and watch the Copper Golem go to work.
How to Enable & Spawn Them in Your World
To test out these features, you’ll need to enroll in experimental mode:
- Enable Experimental Features in your Bedrock world settings.
- Spawn the Copper Golem by placing a carved pumpkin on a copper block (crafted from nine copper ingots). A Copper Chest automatically appears too.
Tip: You can also use a jack-o-lantern instead of a carved pumpkin. The Copper Golem will still spawn and function correctly whether the chest is waxed, oxidized, or pristine.

Mechanics of Sorting: How It Works
The Copper Golem follows a simple yet effective sorting routine:
- Pickup Behavior: It retrieves items from Copper Chests—up to 16 items at once, including from any oxidation stage.
- Placement Logic: The golem searches nearby chests (both regular and trapped) to deposit items. It prioritizes chests already holding matching items or empties.
- Search Limits & Idle Behavior: It scans up to 10 chests in a row. If nothing matches, it idles for about 7 seconds before trying again. Search area spans roughly 32 blocks horizontally and 8 blocks vertically.
- Constraints: While convenient, the golem is slow and limited. It won’t deposit into barrels, hoppers, shulker boxes, or similar containers. It only works with standard chests.
Crafting & Behavioral Tips for Creators
Here’s how to optimize your setup and make the most of these sorting bots:
- Stack Copper Chests Nearby so the Copper Golem can pick up items and quickly access multiple drop-off zones.
- Organize Nearby Regular Chests by item type—this enables the golem to correctly distribute inventory.
- Use Honeycomb to Wax the Chest (prevents oxidation) if you enjoy a specific visual style. Oxidation doesn’t affect functionality.
- Lead the Golem to specific areas to better manage traffic or rotate active sorting zones.
- Scale as Needed with multiple Copper Golems, each covering their own area or material group—ideal for larger bases.
Summary & Future Outlook
The Copper Golem and Copper Chest in Bedrock 1.21.100 provide an intuitive, accessible system for organizing your base—no redstone expertise required. While still experimental, this feature streamlines inventory and invites creative setups. Keep in mind:
- Experimental features may be refined—give feedback through official channels.
- Look forward to further polish, expanded container support, and potential control features in future updates.
